How to choose the right switch?

2023-08-11

A network switch is a small hardware device that centralizes communications among multiple connected devices within one local area network (LAN). Network switches come in different sizes, features and functions, so choosing a switch to match a particular network sometimes constitutes a daunting task. What should be considered when choosing the appropriate switch for a layer in a particular network?

Network Switches

1.The number of ports

In terms of the number of ports, there are many types, commonly used are 5 ports, 6 ports, 8 ports, 16 ports, etc.
For a small family, 5 or 8 people can be satisfied. If it is used in an office, then various access devices and appropriate idleness must be considered. After all, when expansion is required, it would be very embarrassing if there is no port.

2.Physical port parameters

At present, the mainstream speed of the port is 100M and 1000M. Of course, the non-mainstream port has 10M, but this level is relatively wasteful for ordinary families and office parties.
As for the port type, it is mainly divided into daily RJ45, optical port/SFP, and POE power supply port. For daily shunt use, just buy RJ45. If you need to mix and match cameras, you can choose the POE power supply type.

3. The scale of the network

For the division of network scale, it is mainly divided into small and medium-sized networks and medium and large-scale networks.
For small and medium-sized networks, you can choose Gigabit Layer 2 or Layer 3 managed switches or ordinary unmanaged switches.
As for large-scale networks, try to choose a stackable three-layer network management switch. If possible, use 10 Gigabit ports as much as possible, after all, the total transmission volume is relatively large.

4. Function and use

The main functions of the switch are: standard switching, port isolation, network cloning, etc., which can be selected according to your own needs.
Standard switching: In fact, it is the function of an ordinary switch, used as a basic data exchange, and can connect multiple devices by wire.
Port isolation: Realize two-layer isolation, and each port cannot communicate with each other, which improves the security between terminals and reduces the probability of mutual infection after poisoning.
Network cloning: Turn off flow control on all ports to improve the transmission efficiency of cloned data packets, which is very suitable for schools, Internet cafes and other places.

5. Management type

According to the management type, it is mainly divided into non-network management switches and network management switches, and network management switches are mainly divided into web management and APP management. As for whether network management is needed or how to manage the network, you can choose according to the actual situation.
